I am “giving” Walk Around Philadelphia as a 60th birthday present and am planning the first walk for Monday 11/10. So as to get the birthday gift recipient invested and excited about the experience, I am hoping for a first walk that has some natural beauty and is not too complicated. I am hoping to get them hooked and then we build up to the more adventurous segments. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Hi Curtiss! I love that you’re making a gift of this experience. There are a bunch of options, but one factor is transit and geographic accessibility– for instance if you’re in W philly you might start with a segment that includes some of Cobbs Creek Park, whereas if you’re in NW you might want to include the Andorra Meadow or River Road, but if you’re in the Northeast then maybe the trails behind Benjamin Rush State Park? On the Delaware river front, there are gorgeous bits of the upper delaware river trail (Glen Foerd, the K&T trail etc) and there’s also the lands north of Penn Treaty Park to graffiti pier or if heading south the Washington Ave Pier and Pier 68 and cat villages just south of there. Many possibilities. There’s also the factor of how long you’d want to walk, etc.
Once you’ve taken your first jaunt, please also bring this person to our year end event on Dec 13 at The Cedar Works, and keep an eye out for upcoming printmaking opportunities and other walk events (we might be at Cherry Street Pier on Dec 5)
Please chime back in here and let us know how your first stint goes!

I’m also a big fan of the Miquon to Manayunk section that brings you along the Schuylkill River. It feels like you’re way out in the country in upstate PA, and the houses along the river are super cool to see! Ending up in Manayunk also gives you lots of options for snacks, like Cafe Artesano, which I know is a favorite of the Walk crowd. 🙂

Oooh yes that’s a great one too Michael, because you can start with the train at Miquon, experience the wild magic of River Road, and generally come back towards Manayunk and the Wissahickon Transportation Center which give many options for getting home. (And it’s all on the same rail line so you can also leave a car at either end.
But on the far side of town, simply exploring Mt Moriah Cemetery is also brilliant.
